Designed by Nicholas Frewing for Race Furniture – Called Flexible, High-Back Lounge Chair, c.1964

A rare mid-century high-back Flexible lounge chair with a laminated beech frame, nylon-coated steel mesh seat and back, loose upholstered cushions, and aniline-dyed leather armrests, one with the impressed maker's mark beneath.

Designed by Nicholas Frewing while at the Royal College of Art, the Flexible chair pioneered an innovative construction in which the mesh seat and back hook into the frame without screws or tools, creating a lightweight yet remarkably comfortable design. This high-back example is the same model held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

The design received the Duke of Edinburgh's Prize for Elegant Design and the Design Centre Award in 1966.
